Facilities

The different sectors of the laboratories are:

I. Chemical analysis sector

It is equipped with elemental analyzers (CHSN/O) and O/N, two atomic absorptions, spectrophotometer and gas chromatograph. It is specialized in metal, slag and ceramics chemical analysis with microwave digestion furnace, muffle furnaces precision balances up to 6 digits and unit for the production of ultra pure water. Moreover, a Laser Induced Breackdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) system equipped with YAG laser, ICCD camera, etc is under development for on line chemical analysis of metallurgical slags.

II. Materials processing sector
It is equipped with melting induction furnaces, vacuum/inert gas induction furnaces, induction furnace for smelting metallurgical slag and residues with a graphite susceptor, gas blowing and temperature controllers, Tammann furnaces, annealing furnaces, muffle furnaces and SiC furnaces up to 1500°C, equipment designated for the study of traditional ceramics such as extruder, grinders, mixers, sieves, mills, vacuum drying oven, muffle furnaces, cone penetrometer, hydraulic presses, powder injection molding device, fluidized bed reactors for heat treatment, surface modification processes and formation of protective coatings on metals by CVD, PVD installation, metal plating installation, etc.

III. Materials characterisation sector

It is equipped for Metallography, Ceramography (cutting, embedding polishing), with optical microscopes with image processing, interference microscope, stereoscopes, hot stage (up to 1750°C). It is also equipped with Micro-hardness (Vickers, Knoop) and hardness testers (Vickers, Brinel, Rockwell). Dilatometer and DTA operating up to 1600°C, Differential Scanning Calorimetry up to 1500 °C, high temperature sessile drop device, tensile-compression testing machine, electric conductivity tester with installation for high temperature measurements, surface roughness device, coating thickness tester working on the magnetic induction principle or on the eddy current one, potensiostat/galvanostat for potentiodynamic corrosion evaluation measurements etc. There are also facilities for X-Ray diffraction, F.T.I.R., ESCA, SEM-EDS, -WDX through a special service unit of the University respectively.

IV. Computing Sector

The thermodynamic simulation and mathematical modeling of the processes as well as the image analysis and processing are supported by local computer network. The thermochemical calculations are performed by the ChemSage, HSC and Equitherm software packages.

V. Pilot plant

A semi– industrial plant consisting of rotary kiln, granulation facility, Dwight-Lloyd sinterband, electric reduction furnace and casting equipment has been installed at LARCO’s metallurgical plant.
